My parents owned and ran three record stores--Donald's Discos in LaPaz, Bolivia; The Record Shop in Westchester County; and The Music Shop in West Hartford. Records surrounded and shaped my life. They were the bread and butter and the avenue to the world of music--music of all kinds. We ordered records, picked them up, unpacked boxes of them, placed them on shelves, played them for customers, sold them, took them home, listened to them, fell in love with their contents, and played them as accompaniment to most of the activities in our home. I still have lots of them, as well as one record player. So far I haven't played them in years, but I plan to, "any day now". It is oddly comforting to know they are there and it was nice to remember them as I read your words.Lady.Dr.https://www.blogger.com/profile/01412172163831618760noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8110129349217939406.post-60002231222922386592011-10-22T14:17:56.747-07:002011-10-22T14:17:56.747-07:00Nice article Josh. In addition to the formats you mention I also have a fair number of 12" 45s with one or two songs on each side. Growing up my parents had little books with sleeves for 7" 45s that they called "albums", I was playing DJ, although we didn't know the name for it yet, by age 6. It kept me entertained and save my mom steps to the turntable. The side effect is a lifelong passion for discovering and collecting music. BTW I buy plenty of brand new vinyl 12" and 7", yes they still press them. In a recent article in the NY times, it was revealed that while overall music sales were down last year, they sale of vinyl was way up! Only thing is, they're not so handy to play in the car!ScottiBhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12385063456646860081noreply@blogger.com
